Knee Injuries In Woman

Knee injuries in woman are reaching alarming levels

More woman and girls are involved in sports these days which is leading to overuse injuries.

More than 20,000 high school girls suffer a serious sports related injury each year in the United States. Girls are up to seven times more likely to injure their anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) than boys in similar sports.

Michelle's Story

(read Michelle's story about her ACL repair with Dr. Bahu)

The ACL is one of the 4 major ligaments in the knee. Its prevents the knee from "giving out". Why woman are more susceptible to ACL tear in not clear. Some of the suspected causes include:

Year round sports without time for rest and recuperation. This can lead to overuse and fatigue injuries.

There are more females in sports these days. The gap between men and woman has diminished over the years.

The speed, power, and intensity that female athletes are playing have dramatically increased.

There are numerous anatomical and hormonal differences that may make females more prone to injury.

Less than 1/3 of all reported ACL injuries involve some outside force. Most of these injuries are non-contact injuries that result from a sudden change in direction, cutting movements, or landing from a jump.

Incorporating a strengthening and neuromuscular retraining program can help reduce these injuries.
